Pros and Cons
Pros: He can enter fights easily using his Deadly Charge. He has a number of crowd control at his disposal.
Cons: His abilities are mana-dependent. He lacks the ability to disengage in a fight. The only ability accessible for him to escape is the Tier 7 talent Bolt of the Storm.
Playing Style
Some of Alarak's talents and abilities are designed to be used with allies nearby just like how Alarak must be supported during the Rak'Shir ritual in Legacy of the Void.
Alarak is best used when team fights occur on lanes where minions are around because of Alarak's trait: Ascension. When enemy minions die around Alarak, he becomes more durable and can stay on fights longer.
Alarak also excels on securing kills. HisDeadly Charge can be utilized to chase escaping enemy units with an instant body block. Psionic Pulse can also be thrown to slow down escaping enemies. If the enemy players have overextended and are escaping through lanes where your allied minions pass through, you can cast Soul Absorption on your minions and gain enough movement speed to chase the escaping opponents.
If your team needs to disengage in a losing team fight, Destruction Wave can be casted to deal additional damage and blow enemy units away. This can also be casted to throw the enemies towards your pursuing teammates if you come behind the enemies or if you charge behind the enemy back line using Deadly Charge and immediately casting Destruction Wave.
It's best to team-up with The Lost Vikings and/or Rexxar & Misha if you want to maximize Alarak's other Heroic Ability, Destruction Ray because its damage and effect increases with more allied heroes around Alarak.
It's also good to pair Malfurion with Alarak to sustain Alarak's mana by using Malfurion's Innervate.
Alarak can be built to deal Burst Damage by focusing on talents that improve the Psionic Pulse ability.
On Tier 2, Force Pulse can significantly increase the damage dealt but Psionic Pulse when it hits more targets.
The Dark Pulse of Tier 3 can increase the damage further because of its follow-up pulse effect and it can also blind enemies caught in it.
On Tier 4, both Heroics can deal massive damage to your opponents but in order to maximize the damage output of Destruction Wave, you have to make sure that Alarak's current mana is in maximum.
There are a lot of Tier 5 talents that can improve Alarak's Psionic Pulse. - Void Shield can be a big help to your teammates as it shields them with Alarak's current Ascension shield. This can be maximized when the team fight becomes too clumped up and when Alarak's shield is on max. - Psionic Blast is perfect if you're the kind of player that always wants to hit enemies directly and spot on. If the enemies are on the center of the Psionic Pulse, they are going to receive tons of damage. - Amon's Bolt is for patient players that loves to charge up. It's really going to be a treat (and a threat to your enemies) if you charge this up to max in a bush or behind a wall then throw the Psionic Pulse to your enemies right before a team fight starts then immediately enter a team fight using Deadly Charge so you don't miss any action.
For the Burst build, Overdrive is the only way to go in Tier 6.
For the Storm Talents, you can either want to improve your Heroic Abilities or choose Tal'darimVengeance so your abilities will do more damage when your allies die. Just make sure that you don't die.
Alarak can also be built to deal massive damage using Basic Attacks alone. This is better if you want to fight alone. (But who wants to fight alone in the Nexus?)
Choosing Seasoned Marksman as a Tier 1 talent will let Alarak grow his Attack Damage through time if the player can stack it up right.
On Tier 2, the player can choose between Focused Attack for higher damage output, or Vampiric Assault for sustainability. Both of these talents can improve Alarak's Basic Attacks.
On reaching Tier 3 talents, choosing Searing Attacks can enhance Alarak's Basic Attacks further but at the cost of mana.
Giant Killer is Alarak's perfect Tier 5 talent if you're building for Basic Attacks especially if you are fighting tanky opponents. That Is Irrelevant is also a good choice if you want to isolate an opponent and pound the target with your Basic Attacks.
On Tier 6, you have to option to choose Executioner if you want to deal more damage per hit to enemies affected by crowd control, and Berserk which will allow you to execute more Basic Attacks.
Nexus Blades will be the perfect talent in Tier 7 on any Basic Attack build for Alarak especially if you chose Executioner on Tier 6.
