Deckard Cain is a fragile ranged hero who primarily contributes to his team in indirect ways. Using his network of Waypoints, Deckard explores the battleground, cataloguing demons and artifacts he encounters.
A few key points that I feel are required to capture the 'fantasy' of Deckard Cain: - although he is weak and tries to avoid combat, he is capable of wielding some Horadrim magic, albeit briefly
- he does head out into the battleground - - Deckard is always out exploring, even in a world full of demons
- he is knowledgeable about ancient relics - - the closest analogy in HotS being map objectives
Combat Trait
1
Horadric Knowledge
Deckard channels objectives and captures points 100% faster than other heroes.
Above: Deckard using his Horadric Knowledge to rapidly capture a nuke.
Primary Abilities
1
Arcane Shock
Deal damage equal to all enemies in melee range equal to 20% of their current health. This spell is half as effective against Monsters.
5 second cooldown.
Note: This spell works like the Diablo 2 Sorceress spell 'Static Field' in that it is very powerful initially, but has diminishing returns as enemies lose more health. It is important to remember that Deckard is very squishy and is not able to stand and trade against other heroes. This ability is primarily used as a deterrent against enemy heroes engaging upon him.
2
Book Of Cain
Channel for 3 seconds to identify and reveal a demon that's possessing a target allied minion, increasing their health by 200% and imbuing them with an affix. Other allied minions nearby when Book Of Cain is cast have their health increased by 25%. Affixes include:
- Melee Minions become Fire Enchanted: Attacks deal additional fire damage
- Archer Minions become Cold Enchanted: Attacks slow targets movement and attack speed
20 second cooldown.
Above: Valla approaches a demon exposed by the enemy team's Deckard Cain. Note the health bar with the name and affix at the top of the screen.
3
Horadric Ward
Shield yourself for 4 seconds. While the shield holds your channels are not interrupted by taking damage.
16 second cooldown. Can be cast during channeling.
Secondary Abilities
1
Horadric Cube
After collecting 3 Regeneration Globes, combine them to create a Gem. Each Gem you have can be used to instantly defeat 1 uncaptured non-boss mercenary.
Heroic Abilities
1
Cairn Stones
Spawn a dormant Cairn Stone in the center of each lane. Cain can activate a nearby Cairn stone by clicking on it. Once all Cairn Stones are active they will periodically deal lightning damage to nearby enemies.
Active Cairn Stones can be killed by enemies, but they have very high health.
2 minute cooldown. Cairn Stones last 90 seconds after being activated.
2
Staff Of Kings
Place your staff at the target location for 8 seconds. While it remains, enemies within its range deal 50% less damage to you. In addition, enemies within range of the staff that are hit by your basic attacks become vulnerable, taking 25% increased damage for 2 seconds.
80 second cooldown. Staff can be destroyed by enemies.
Special Mount
1
Waypoint
Waypoints exist near every Keep and Fort on the map.
Deckard can use Waypoints to travel to any other Waypoint on the map if he has visited it once to activate it.
Talents
Level 1: Study Weakness:(Quest) Basic attacks dealt to enemy heroes permanently increase the damage your basic attacks deal to that hero by 5%, up to 50%.
(Reward) After reaching 50% against a specific hero, increase that bonus by an additional 50%. Scholar: Areas revealed by your vision remain visible for 8 seconds after you have left the area. Mind Blast: Arcane Shock hits enemy heroes that have attacked you in the last 3 seconds, even if they are not in range. Haste: Gain 20% movement speed for 4 seconds after using a Waypoint.
Level 4: Arcane Dust: If Arcane Shock hits no enemy heroes its mana cost is refunded and its cooldown is reduced to 2 seconds. Nightmare Difficulty: Book of Cain applies a second random affix to the target. Hell Difficulty: Book Of Cain applies all 3 affixes to the target, but its cooldown is increased to 30 seconds. Level 7: Past Is Prologue: The next basic attack after you use an ability deals 25% increased damage and reduces the cooldowns of your basic abilities by 1 second. Arcane Imbued: Arcane Shock provides you with a shield equal to 5% of your health for each enemy hero it hits. This shield deteriorates over the course of Arcane Shock's cooldown. Tome Of Identify: Book Of Cain can be used on non-boss mercenaries, and the 25% bonus health aura also applies to nearby allied non-boss mercenaries. Tal Rasha's Wrappings: Book Of Cain can be used on allied heroes, but it does not increase their health. Lasts 6 seconds. - Warriors becomeLightning Enchanted - Assassins becomeFire Enchanted - Specialists and Supports become Cold Enchanted.
Level 10:
See above section. Level 13: Superior Knowledge: Horadric Knowledge allows you to cap points even when there are enemies on it. Tome Of Town Portal: Your hearthstone channel benefits from Horadric Knowledge while you are under the effect of Horadric Ward. Secret Passage: Capturing a mercenary camp spawns a permanent Waypoint at that location.
Level 16: Cursed Relic: Horadric Knowledge can be activated near an objective or point to prevent enemies from interacting with it for 5 seconds. 45 second cooldown. Breath Of The Dying: Arcane Shock deals damage equal to 30% of enemies remaining health when they are below 75% health. Nemesis Bracers: Activate to summon a copy of the last demon you revealed with Book of Cain. Lasts until killed. 45 second cooldown. Hope Of Cain: If Horadric Ward is destroyed, immediately gain a shield equal to 50% of your health for 3 seconds.
Level 20: Kanai's Cube: Gems created by Horadric Cube can be consumed to allow you to repick a talent. Does not affect heroic abilities. Old Ruins: Cairn Stones also spawn on each destroyed Fort and keep. These extra stones have much less heath and do not need to be activated. Horadric Staff: Enemies near your Staff Of Kings deal 75% less damage to you, and enemies that attack the staff have their attack speed slowed by 75%. Last Of The Horadrim: Allied heroes can use Waypoints. This effect has a 1 minute cooldown for each hero.
the concept id certainly interesting and it is probably one of the more plausible Cain concepts I've seen but it feels a bit weird. I don't like him revealing that ally minions are demons because it makes no sense for demons to help Cain so I'd make it the exact opposite maybe identify an enemy minion and debuff it, probably give it a death effect if you ask me. I think that it will feel more logical that way. Then I like the concept for his E but seems that it will be useless in games without things to channel on plus the cooldown seems a bit too large for what it does. His second heroic sounds decent but it defenately needs lots of work maybe even a rework. Inthe ened he is pretty well done but not perfect. Also his Q seems kind of out of place for his kit idk.
Dispite the negative feeback I have to say it is one of the better Cain concepts I've seen. I just tend to point out the flaws of things just because it is easier to see the bad stuff than the good but don't let that scare you. <3
Edit:
I am really confused out his mount. How it wirks exactly can you clarify it.
Thanks for the feedback. All of your criticisms are things I kind of agree with as well. I haven't really worked on this concept for awhile (it was initially published a year ago), but if I were to really sit down with it again I'd be looking to change a lot of the things you mentioned.
For clarification on his mount: it would essentially work like Zagara's Nydus Network in that there would be a Waypoint next to every fort/keep. Deckard can travel from one to another, but only if he's visited that Waypoint to activate it.
Thanks. I hope this concept shows that Deckard has the potential to be an interesting hero.
His second heroic I'm not crazy about either. I absolutely *hate* the "Stay Awhile And Listen" meme that gets thrown out as a skill idea every time he gets brought up, so I went out of my way to avoid it. Your interpretation of it is fine, I've just never liked the fantasy of it as an ability.
very much the same, figured out may have been the case so so posted the alternative of something to be aware of :), thank you
either way let's hope won't be long before we finally get our dirty hungry hands on the hero !! :D

The "Stay awhile and listen" mechanic I have here is a good example of what his 2nd heroic should be a better impact/idea IMO: https://www.heroesfire.com/hots/concept/deckard-cain-7548
Yeah, kinda shameless by my side to offer a "better deal", but think it would be more fitting and less "meh" overall
HUGE GRATZ for the overall concept though
