Rework Concept

Once the Aspect of Wisdom, Malthael abandoned heaven after the Worldstone's destruction. In secret, he had resolved to end the Eternal Conflict by becoming a Reaper of Souls and eliminating everything affected by demonic corruption, including humanity.

This is a rework concept for Malthael. My aim is to give him back his tank-meltor/bruiser/duelist role, which was greatly diminished in favor of a solo-laner/jungler role, and emphasize his playstyle variety through giving him multiple viable builds that favor different playstyles.

Combat Trait

[Trait] Reaper's Mark
Damage: 2% max health/sec.
Duration: 4 sec.
Malthael's basic attacks apply Reaper's Mark to enemies, causing them to take damage equal to 2% of their maximum health every second for 4 seconds.

❢ Quest: Apply Reaper's Mark to enemy Heroes for a total of 240 seconds.
❢ Reward: Increases the duration of Reaper's Mark by 2 seconds.

Deal 100 damage to every nearby enemy afflicted with Reaper's Mark. Each enemy hit by Soul Rip heals Malthael for 44 health.
Hitting enemy Heroes heals Malthael for an additional 3% of their maximum health.

Activate to gain 15 physical armor for every enemy Hero afflicted with Reaper's Mark, up to 75 physical armor, for 4 seconds.

At least one Reaper's Mark must be active to use this ability.

Activate to become immune to damage for 1 second.

Activate while dead to instantly respawn, but increase Malthael's next respawn timer by 25%.

Maximum Armor: 25
Unleash a torrent of souls, continually applying Reaper's Mark to nearby enemies for 4 seconds. Malthael gains 5 armor, up to 25, for every enemy Hero within Tormented Souls' radius when it is initially cast.
Killing enemies afflicted with Reaper's Mark lowers the cooldown of Tormented Souls by 1 second.

Cooldown: 65 sec.
Mana Cost: 100
Damage: 50% of missing health
Range: 5
Delay: 2 sec.
Apply a death sentence to an enemy Hero that deals damage equal to 50% of their missing health and applies a Reaper's Mark after a 2 second delay.

❢ Repeatable Quest: Enemies killed between the application of Last Rites and within 1.5 seconds of it dealing damage permanently reduce its cooldown by 5 seconds, to a minimum of 15 seconds.

[Trait/W] Death's Reach
Increases the range of Wraith Strike by 40%.

[E] Tides of Doom
Reduces Death Shroud's cooldown to 6 seconds.
Hitting an Hero with Death Shroud reduces its cooldown by 2 seconds, down to a minimum of 2 seconds.

[Mount] On a Pale Horse
Increases Malthael's mounted movement speed by an additional 20%.

[Active] Fear the Reaper
Activate this ability to gain 25% movement speed and the ability to pass through units for 4 seconds.


Level 4


[Trait] Shallow Grave
Reaper's Mark deals an additional 16 damage every second.

[Basic Attack] The Culling
Basic attacks deal additional damage equal to 1.5% of target's maximum health to enemies afflicted with both Reaper's Mark and slows, roots, or stuns.

[Q] Die Alone
If Soul Rip hits only one Hero, it deals 75% additional damage to that Hero.

[E] Throwing Shade
Increases the travel speed of Death Shroud by 33%.
? Quest: Hit 10 enemy Heroes with Death Shroud.
? Reward: Increases the width of Death Shroud by 33% and reduces its mana cost by 15.
? Quest: Hit 20 enemy Heroes with Death Shroud.
? Reward: Increases the length of Death Shroud by 33% and reduces its mana cost by 15.


Level 7


[Trait/Active] Death's Grip
Activate to reduce healing received by enemies afflicted with Reaper's Mark by 50% for 4 seconds, then heal for 50% of the healing prevented.

[Q] Cold Hand
Soul Rip slows enemies by 20% for 2.5 seconds.

[Basic Attack/W] Massacre
Every third basic attack within 6 seconds cleaves to all enemies within 3.25 range in a 170

Ability Change Notes

[Trait] Reaper's Mark - Made Black Harvest baseline, since it was too integral to a lot of his utility. It now takes a good deal longer to complete to account for being able to make progress for it earlier and it now being baseline.


[Basic Attack] Grim Sickles - Restored to pre-rework state, but also gave it a name just because.


[Q] Soul Rip - Restored to pre-rework state.


[W] Wraith Strike - No changes.


[E] Death Shroud - Restored to pre-rework state.


[R1] Tormented Souls - Tormented Souls now grants Malthael 5 armor for every Hero hit by its first application of Reaper's Mark. This only applies for the initial cast, so the amount of armor he gains becomes fixed for the duration.
Due to armor values no longer stacking, as they did when Malthael was first released, this should no longer be as overpowering as it was when it could stack with Ethereal Existence or Shroud of Wisdom.
Tormented Souls' cooldown has been increased by 20 seconds, but it is now possible to speed up the cooldown by killing enemies affected by Reaper's Mark.


[R2] Last Rites - Now also applies a Reaper's Mark to its target after striking them.

Talent Change Notes

Level 1


[W] Death's Reach - Increased the range bonus slightly to bump its appeal up just a little bit.

[E] Tides of Doom - New talent that reduces Death Shroud's cooldown slightly and grants cooldown reduction for hitting Heroes with Death Shroud. This combos well with Throwing Shade and another new talent, Fading Light.

[Mount] On a Pale Horse - No changes.

[Active] Fear the Reaper - No changes.



Level 4


[Trait] Shallow Grave - New talent that causes Reaper's Mark to deal an additional flat damage amount that is not based on afflicted enemies' maximum health. This will allow Malthael to more heavily pressure or punish low health Assassins who come too close.
Shallow Grave's bonus damage is not affected by modifiers such as armor or spell power and does not benefit from Memento Mori, but does scale with level.

[Basic Attack] The Culling - New talent that adds percentage-based damage to Malthael's basic attacks against enemies afflicted with both Reaper's Mark and movement-affecting crowd control.

[Q] Die Alone - Restored the pre-rework bonus damage to account for basic attacks no longer allowing easy spread of Reaper's Mark, but kept the looser restriction on hitting non-Heroes.

[W] Throwing Shade - Split into a two-part quest and added a baseline travel speed buff. The first part increases the width of Death Shroud, and the second part increases the length of Death Shroud. Both parts of the quest decrease the mana cost of Death Shroud.



Level 7


[Trait/Active] Death's Grip - Renamed from Touch of Death and added an effect that heals Malthael for a portion of the healing prevented after the ability ends.

[Q] Cold Hand - No changes.

[W] Massacre - Added a passive effect that causes every third basic attack within a period of time to cleave.

[E] Fading Light - New talent that causes Death Shroud to blind and slow enemies it hits. The duration of the blind and slow is doubled if the target is already afflicted with Reaper's Mark prior to being hit by Death Shroud.



Level 13


[Trait/Active] Ethereal Existence - Reduced the passive armor gain effect, but it can now be activated to triple its passive effect briefly.

[Q] Soul Siphon - Restored to pre-rework state.

[Active] Shroud of Wisdom - Changed to grant total immunity to damage (not Invulnerability) for a brief period.

[Passive/Active] Inevitable End - Cooldown increased.


Level 16


[Trait] Memento Mori - Changed to have scaling damage depending on how many times Reaper's Mark has been reapplied to a target by basic attacks or basic abilities.

[Q] Soul Collector - No changes.

[W] Mortality - Swapped with Massacre and added a passive effect that resets the cooldown of Wraith Strike and heals Malthael when an enemy Hero afflicted with Reaper's Mark is killed.

[Active] Deathstroke - New talent that allows Malthael to get some burst damage out of active Reapers Marks at the expense of removing them. To prevent completely circumventing the immediate loss of all active Reaper's Marks, this ability cannot be used during Tormented Souls' duration.


Level 20


[E] Final Curtain - No changes.

[Active] No One Can Stop Death - No changes.

[R1] Reaper of Souls - Changed to increase Tormented Souls radius and duration slightly and added a repeatable quest that rewards killing Heroes afflicted with Reaper's Mark by permanently increasing the duration of Tormented Souls slightly.

[R2] Angel of Death - Added additional cooldown reduction for killing a Hero with Last Rites after completing its quest.
