Occupy has a lot of words, how does this ability work?
The description for Occupy is wordy, but if you are familiar of how Abathur's Symbiote ability works it will be familiar. Mechanically, Occupy creates an invisible "Symbiote" above a hero's head, anchors the game camera to that hero, and replaces your basic abilities with new abilities that when activated target the area around that hero. Unlike Symbiote, Occupy can be cast on enemy as well as allied heroes, is a channeled ability (so it will end if Rohana is interrupted), has a limited range to initiate instead of being global baseline, is limited in duration, and a tether is created between Rohana and her Occupy target.
What is the tether?
Simply put, the tether is a beam between Rohana and her Occupy target that deals damage to enemies or heals allies who touch it. It does not heal Rohana or deal damage to her target. It does not slow like Probius's
Null Gate, so you will get the most effect from it in teams with a lot of slows, roots, or stuns.
As well as an indicator to allow the enemy team to know roughly where Rohana is channeling, the tether also serves as a visual element to estimate how much damage you can expect to take if you cast Khala Transmission. The tether will change color based on the distance between Rohana and her target, green or blue when close, changing to yellow at moderate distances, and red at very long distances. You can expect to take more damage the further into the warmer color spectrum tether has.
Why does Agitate, the Q ability during Occupy, not deal any damage to enemies? Isn't dealing damage and healing on the same ability sort of her deal?
Yes, most of Rohana's abilities both deal damage and heal, but Agitate does not deal damage out of necessity. I felt that a long duration, pseduo-global non-heroic ability consistently dealing damage, interrupting objective channels, and dismounting a player without reasonable counter-play was not fun. First and foremost, Rohana is a support hero and the fantasy of playing support is to change the tide of team fights with your skillful input. With this in mind, Agitate was created to be effective in team fights and perhaps a slight annoyance outside fights, similar to Leoric's skeletal swing while dead.
The design of Agitate encourages coordination with teammates. The dream is to cast Occupy on a front-line ally or enemy while your team has shields created by you--or they run into the tether to gain shields--and group up to activate Agitate's cooldown reduction, constantly slowing the enemy team while healing your team. The cooldown reduction can be more reliable with the
Quick Quips talent. The slow can be very impactful, allowing your ally with Occupy to position herself to maximize the tether's damage, or in combination with setups from
Grav-O-Bomb 3000,
Mosh Pit or
Graviton Surge. You can take talents in order to make Occupy more of an offensive powerhouse, with
Press Q to Shame being the cornerstone to that build.
Can Perpetuation be used on other players' shields, like Zarya's Personal Barrier or Fenix's Shield Capacitor?
Yes, but be careful because doing so makes the shield becomes owned by Rohana and affected by her talents when she places the shield back on these heroes. This means Zarya will not gain energy from Rohana removing the shield nor when enemies attack her new shield, and Fenix will lose bonuses from talents like
Dampening Field and
Photonic Weaponry as well as losing ~40% of his effective health over 3 seconds, or 4 with the reward from Rohana's
Barrier Mastery.
No Cleanse?
Rohana offers a lot to the team without a straight-forward
Cleanse, including damage prevention with shields. That being said, she has a skillful cleanse-like ability in the talent
Inception. The silence and unstoppable effect only get applied to the target of Occupy, and only if they were targeted by Intrusive Thought. Because the delay to the unstoppable is 2 seconds after pressing Q, using
Inception as a cleanse will take a fair amount of game sense and planning, or be used for more telegraphed abilities.
