Varian (Rework)

High King of the Alliance

General Concept: (Subject to change)
Most of Varian’s power is locked behind his level 10 talents, which in Heroes of the Storm time, is when the game usually begins snowballing out of control and the match is already set – making Varian’s life difficult if his team’s on the backfoot or winning even harder if his team’s in the lead.

The goal of this rework is 3-fold:
• Varian can now select his Heroics at level 1, immediately gaining their passive stat-buff effects with the active effects automatically unlocked at level 10.
• Since Mana doesn’t gate Varian’s ability usage in the slightest and because he is a WoW Warrior, he is moved to the Rage power resource system – which grants his next ability bonus effects at the cost of Rage.
• Taunt has been reworked from stun-lite to an ability that reduces the target’s outgoing damage if they don’t attack Varian, and Varian heals for a portion of all of the damage he took during “Taunt” after it expires.

Combat Trait

[D] Heroic Strike
Recharge Cooldown: 18s

(Rage): Varian passively generates 2 Rage per 1s while below 50 Rage, and loses 2 Rage per 1s while both above 50 Rage and out of combat. Varian actively generates 3 Rage from each of his Basic Attacks.

While at or above 50 Rage, many of Varian’s Abilities gain new effects at the cost of 50 Rage.

(Passive): Every 18s, Varian’s next Basic Attack deals (140 + 3.5% Per Level) bonus Spell damage to the victim. Each of Varian’s Basic Attacks instantly recharges Heroic Strike by 2s.

Cast Range: 7y
Missile Width: 1.25y
Cooldown: 8s

(Active): Varian heaves his sword across the ground, creating a shockwave that deals (150 + 4% Per Level) Spell damage to enemies it passes through and makes them move slower equal to their missing Health Percentage for 2s.

If Lion’s Fang slow exceeds 50%, the excess slow decays down to 50% over its duration.

(Rage Bonus): Lion’s Fang refunds 10% of its cooldown per enemy hit or 20% if they were a Hero.

Cost: 1 Parry Charge
Charge Cooldown: 8s

(Stock): Every 8s Varian stores 1 Parry charge, up to 2.

(Active): Varian tightens his stance, Deflecting all incoming Basic Attacks for 0.75s but moves 30% slower.

(Rage Bonus): Varian no longer moves slower while Parrying.

(Active): Varian dashes towards the enemy target, generating 25 Rage on impact.

(Passive): Choose a Specialization as a Tier 1 talent.

Requires Tier 1 Talent: Champion
Cast Range: 5y
Cooldown: 16s

(Passive): Varian equips a shield in his off-hand, increasing his maximum Health by 30%. Varian generates 1 Rage from each incoming Basic Attack or for every (20 + 4% Per Level) damage he takes or mitigates.

Unlocked at Level 10
(Active): Varian goads the enemy target into attacking him for 4s, reducing their damage done by 30% if they attack someone other than Varian.

When Vigilance expires, Varian is healed for 15% of the damage he took during its duration or 40% if it originated from Vigilance’s target.

(Rage Bonus): Vigilance’s non-duration effects are increased by 100%.

[R-2] Colossus Smash
Requires Tier 1 Talent: Blademaster
Cast Range: 5y
Cooldown: 20s

(Passive): Varian throws his full strength into each Basic Attack, increasing his Base Attack Damage by 100% but reducing his maximum Health by 10%. Charge’s cooldown is reduced by 8s.

Unlocked at Level 10
(Active): Tear into the enemy target’s defenses, reducing their Armor by 25 for 3s.

(Rage Bonus): Colossus Smash deals Ability damage equal to 20% of the victim’s stored Health Percentage or (160 + 4% Per Level) minimum.

[R-3] Shalla'tor and Ellemayne
Requires Tier 1 Talent: Berserker

(Passive): Varian splits Shalamayne into its original two swords to dual-wield, increasing his Attack Speed by 75% but reducing his Base Attack damage by 20%.

Unlocked at Level 10
(Passive): Each of Varian’s Basic Attacks instantly recharge Heroic Strike by 9s and make him move 30% faster for 2s.

Activating a Rage-empowered Ability increases Varian’s Attack Speed by an additional 75% that decays over 2s.

(Passive): Varian adopts a defensive stance, gaining the Specialization of a Warrior. In an effort to have a fair game, Varian is holding himself back until Level 10.

[R-2] Blademaster
(Passive): Varian adopts a precise stance, gaining the Specialization of an Assassin. In an effort to have a fair game, Varian is holding himself back until Level 10.

[R-3] Berserker
(Passive): Varian adopts a reckless stance, gaining a Specialization of a Bruiser. In an effort to have a fair game, Varian is holding himself back until Level 10.
