i also play league of legends and infinite crisis.
what hero should i aim for learning/buying first?

What champions did you enjoy playing in league the most?

also liked ap sion/trist/yi when they were still viable

Well Illidan is a nice melee assassin who jumps around a lot and is slightly similar to those champions. You can wait for the butcher as well - another melee assassin that works kinda like those champions.

So it would seem that you mostly enjoy melee champs with the exception of Tristana and you favor those who have high burst abilities, or can do well in a brawl, so I would recommend:

• Zeratul- He's a stealth based assassin similar to Rengar, but with less auto-attacking involved and more ability based like old Yi/Sion. I believe he's the best hero for you, based on the champions that you used to enjoy.
  
• Kerrigan - Another melee assassin, but she also possess quick a bit of durability.
  
• Johanna - Since you listed Shen, I assume you would enjoy a very tanky hero who can do some moderate damage, while forcing her enemies to get close to her, via Condemn
  
• Nova - Is a stealth based ranged assassin that works similarly how old Tristana/Yi worked, if you take Triple Tap and Fast Reload, you can start getting resets on low health targets and end up with fairly easy quadras/pentas.

Well, if you complete your daily quests and get all the heroes that go on free rotation to level 5, for that gold reward, you shouldn't have too much trouble unlocking all the heroes that I listed in a reasonable amount of time.
