Uther Top

Uther is what you would expect from a Warcraft inspired paladin. He can dish out heals and inflict respectable damage. Think of this as a Retribution build from World of Warcraft. We will have slightly less heals but the upgrades to Hammer of Justice and spells such as Shrink Ray will compensate greatly. You are Uther the Lightbringer from old school Warcraft, act like it.

Pros

-Decent HP and damage
-Variety of stuns and slows
-Durable healer that contributes damage and CC during team fights

Cons

-No true escape ability, although quickly turning around and using Hammer of Justice or Shrink Ray (after level 13) isn't a terrible option.
-An awkward mixture of DPS, tank, support and healing which can be grueling to manage
-Pretty much screwed if you are the only melee hero. Uther works best with teams of 1 or 2 warriors, he doesn't have quite enough HP to be considered a tank. If forced to be the tank, it's going to be a rough match.

Talents Top

Basic Talents

Holy Light - Your bread and butter heal, constantly use this ability. You should rarely be low on mana with this upcoming build.

Holy Radiance - Amazing for team battles, simultaneously heal all allies and damage all enemies within the cast range. Sometimes you are able to last-hit retreating heroes when you can't quite chase them down. Holy Radiance can also be used as a pedestrian lane-clearing spell when needed. Finally, regardless of what you hit this ability heals you every time.

Hammer of Justice - Cast range for this basic (but very useful) stun is slightly further than melee. Lockdown opponents while your teammates burn them down. This can also be used to aid your escape or save a low HP teammate from being last-hit. Wave your hammer out in the open and be proud of it. Wait...What?

Heroic Abilities

Divine Shield - Shield an ally to save them from being killed, this can turn the tide in team battles and save your team a lengthy late-game hero resurrection.

Divine Storm - Deal damage and Stun a small area around Uther. Good for team battles and another stun to add to your arsenal.

Traits

Eternal Devotion - Pay attention after you die! You can control your hero for 10 seconds and heal for this short time.

Flash of Light - A crash of drums, a flash of light... Anyone....Anyone? Donnie Osmond?... Nevermind. This trait allows you to heal with an incredibly short cooldown after you die. You can easily pocket heal WoW style to aid a 1v1 or towards the end of a team battle when everyone is low on HP.

Hero Build Top

Level 1

Fist of Justice - Uther's a healer, shouldn't you focus on abilities that improve his healing? As Hank Hill says when someone wants their steak well-done: "We ask them politely, yet firmly to leave." You do have heals but focusing on them makes Uther an offensively weak hero that has melee range. If he was ranged things might be different. Since we have to get down and dirty in melee range we need to stop being such a ninny. If you are continually auto-attacking the cooldown of Hammer of Justice is reduced to 5 seconds thanks to Fist of Justice This makes Uther a deceptively strong 1v1 character. I have surprised and killed many opponents during 1v1's Uther should not be able to beat traditionally. You are able to stun every 5 seconds plus heal yourself with Holy Light and heal/damage with Holy Radiance. Make sure to animation cancel!

Level 4

Hammer of the Lightbringer - Uther's attack speed is 1 per second so it's easy to calculate how much mana this ability gives. Do you like 8 mana per second? I do. To give some perspective Uther generates 3 mana per second at level 1, at level 20 it only increases to 4.85 mana per second. Not a big increase at all, sounds like the cost of living compared to wages in America. You need something to improve this and Hammer of the Lightbringer does just that. You have increased incentive to auto attack minions, heroes, even leftover enemy walls. Now every time Uther strikes he gains 8 mana and the cooldown of Hammer of Justice is reduced by 1 second. This talent compensates for not getting the curiously popular conjurers pursuit at level 1. Quit playin' with yer dingy and get in there!

Level 7

Burden of Guilt - After Hammer of Justice expires it also slows. Later in the game combined with Shrink Ray you can lock-down almost any hero. I usually don't try too hard to chase down an opponent or waste my mana using Hammer of Justice until after this ability.

With the platinum gauntlets, and the platinum pauldrons
With the platinum hauberk, and the platinum hammer
I'm the #1 stunna Wh-what, wh-what, what

Level 10

Divine Storm - You can never get upset having 2 separate stuns at your disposal. Combined with Hammer of Justice this is a sweet stun rotation. The radius isn't huge, maybe a little further than Thunderclap with Muradin. Divine Storm is a great move to stun and damage. Rather than being able to shield one teammate for a minuscule 3 seconds (I think it should be 5 seconds without the level 20 upgrade. Example: Tyrael can shield THE WHOLE TEAM for 3 seconds with his heroic. Divine Shield Seems nerfed IMO.) you can stun multiple enemies allowing for AOE abilites and AOE ults. This heroic synergises very well with any other AOE ult.

Level 13

Shrink Ray - Combined with Hammer of Justice this is a maddening stun/slow combination for your enemies to deal with. After you initially stun with Hammer of justice the slow of Burden of Guilt kicks in allowing you to strike your opponent a few more times reducing the cooldown of your hammer. Once the slow is over you cast Shrink Ray allowing further auto attacks to reduce your hammers cooldown. By the time Shrink Ray expires you will have another charge of Hammer of Justice. The key to this spell rotation is patience, remember that Burden of Guilt affects the target after the stun is over. Count in your head after the initial stun expires before you cast shrink ray to allow maximum duration of slow. If done correctly the following rotation provides 10 seconds of your enemy being either slowed or stunned: Hammer of Justice (1 second stun) Burden of Guilt (2 second slow) Shrink Ray (4 second slow) Hammer of Justice (1 second stun) Burden of Guilt (2 second slow) = 10 seconds. Shrink Ray is a great ability that is both offensive and defensive. Uther does not have a built-in escape and this can be used as one. It has saved my bacon more times than I can remember.

Level 17

Benediction - Wouldn't it be nice if you could eliminate the cooldown of a basic ability? Oh wait, that's what this does. Let your mind wander in a non-sexual way (unless you want to) and imagine the possibilities. Dual cast Holy Light for massive heals or use 2 charges of Holy Radiance during crowded team battles. My personal favorite is using Hammer of Justice twice in a row to lock up a hero while my teammates finish the kill. Benediction will last indefinitely once cast. Use it in the middle of battle or queue it up when you know things are about to get interesting. This ability is insane for maps such as Cursed Hollow and Sky Temple during prolonged, HP draining team battles surrounding the map objectives.

Level 20

Redemption - Yes, yes, and yes. Come back to life after death at your current location so your team keeps their healer and stunner. By level 20 the resurrection timers are painful. Avoid those waits and a shorthanded team with this ability. Uther jumps right back into a team battle and turns the tide. I have surprised many opponents with a sudden resurrection healing an ally, stunning an enemy, using Shrink Ray etc.. Simply rocking the casbah all around when I come back to life.

Conclusion Top

Uther is a great character but he can't be thrust into any team composition and expect to perform well. If you are putting together a team that does not have a warrior I would advise against selecting Uther. However, with a warrior or two he is always a great choice.
