I've been playing HotS since technical alpha and I'm not new to MOBA's in any sense. I enjoyed the early game because it wasn't full of jerks thinking they are the best and everyone but them is a scrub. Of course, as more players joined and especially now...well...is full of the some of the worst nerd rage since I played LoL long ago.
There is never a need to call other players names, tell them they suck, or anything. If you have someone obviously new, the best thing you can do is guide them. For example, I had a really bad Murky on my team who had his egg killed repeatedly. After the 3rd time, I checked his egg positioning and just politely showed him the best hiding spot. After that, no more egg kills. A jerk would call him out, say he was the worst Murky, and waste time cussing him out instead of helping the team. It's not hard to redirect a player to a better lane, or to an objective and it's WAY more helpful to your team. It also makes it a much more pleasurable experience.
The games with these people are miserable and more time is spent with them raging than actually playing. I'm just venting because it seems to have become more of an issue. Does anyone else run into this? What do you do in these situations?
I know exactly what your talking about. I've been playing since the beta came out, and indeed allot more jerks are invading this game. It really becomes a very unfriendly environment for new players who just want to have fun.
I've seen the hatred, multiple times each day. Best thing I have found out to do is stand up for the new player, give them tips and hints... and whatever you do, do NOT waste your time replying to the jerk who is raging. Focussing on the new players and just make them feel welcome and let them know not every player is a jerk :)
This experience does come from quick matches only, where there seem to be allot of jerks and 'elitists' these days. Those annoying people who expect 100% teamwork in a match where you play with 5 randoms... yea not going to happen.
Lets hope they are only here in such vast numbers because the game just released, and with a bit of luck these kind of jerk players will go away after a while.

Yesterday I decided to go further combating jerkaritis and during every game I guided the team to objectives, their roles, and supported them with simple phrases like, "gj team!", "awesome timing on those stuns ETC!", "you guys are awesome!".
I didn't expect the results would be as awesome as they were. Each game my team pushed harder, worked together stronger, started giving the same encouragement, my favorite was a Diablo who said, "This is our house now!".
I suddenly started getting tons of friend requests and group invites. I never experienced that before! By the end of the night, I had a full team on curse voice running game after game and killing it. The one thing I noticed was they were all new players.
I think this shows that the toxicity in the game is hindering the full abilities of new players and discouraging them from trying harder.
Being a jerk only makes the game worse by encouraging poor play, more toxicity, and prevents players from learning and getting better in their roles. I sincerely advocate others to try this little social experiment and let me know what you find!

Real quick on the bold statement that I have a issue with. A MOBA is a team game no matter if its QM's or HL. This game focuses more on Team play than any other MOBA I've played. Since playing for the objective is a guaranteed team fight 9/10, that 1 time being that the other team didn't all rotate and its a 3(4)v5.
I'm not expecting tournament style players or anything, but I do expect people to go to all objectives unless they're 100% not needed and can continue pushing. But most times then not grouping up for the objective is going to be a must more than not.
And game after game I get people new and not new that won't group up, rotate quick enough or WAY to late, and instead of coming to the objective. They either feed, or continuously push a lane as were losing the objective and eventually wipe because its 3 or 4v5.
Sometimes/Most times me or my friend in QM's(8 out of 10 heroes before HL) try to ping the map as much as possible, or say in chat "team group up for obj.", do these people listen? NOPE. And its direly frustrating, even when you check hotslog after the game and most of these people that don't listen are 2k+ MMR, which means they have plenty of games under their belt to have that MMR and should know better by now.
So players like me and my friend eventually get fed up from game after game trying to help new players, or just straight clueless players and its impossible to win games no matter on how much you shot call or carry team fights.
I don't know, I do DST (**** Sucking Theory) a.k.a. give people encouragement after doing something good or coming to the obj etc. But sometimes its not enough and this is probably what's causing the toxic comments. Because most people from beta and alpha are just still clueless after this much time has passed in the game.
Hate me if you will but this is the sad truth. Not saying I'm going to Blizzcon and I'm the best player in the world but I tend to make more right decisions than wrong. Can't say that for others. This is the MOBA that is labeled "Babies first MOBA" in my eyes since most everyone says "this is my first moba". *cringe*
I get this and I understand how frustrating it is. There are just really bad players out there that we can't avoid. Not everyone is going to be amazing.
Most important thing I keep telling myself, "Oh well, can't win them all".
I really appreciate this post! I have been in A.I. games for quite a while just because I wanted to avoid the toxic jerks. I have gotten more nerve to try Quickmatches lately since I hit Lvl 30 yesterday.
Today, I was the victim of a "jerk attack" though I'm sure it was pretty tame. I bought the big bundle and was working on some new heroes. I was Lvl 5 with Sonya and starting to get comfortable, but far from good. After about 9 minutes with absolutely ZERO communication from the team, Tychus posted:
"This Sonya is #$&@ terrible."
My reply was simply, "Thanks for the support. Sorry I'm new with this hero."
At the end of the game (which we won, so no damage to Mr. Tychus' street cred), I logged off because it just didn't seem fun.
I want to know why someone like that thinks those comments will accomplish anything. If he was so great, I would have really appreciated some advice. Instead, all I got was confirmation that I suck at Sonya.
When I feel I can help, my comments try to stay supportive. (e.g. After a 5v3 tribute fight, "Next tribute, let's all go for it and we can get the gank on them! We got this!")
My hope was to work up the nerve to ease into Hero League now that I'm 30. I'm not so sure now.
I'd love it if I could find a group of no stress, let's-have-fun people to group up with. With people you trust, you could even get on TeamSpeak or something and do even better!
I have only been playing since launch and I find that compared to the other communities I have been a part of, this one doesn't seem too bad usually. (Mind you I am also new to MOBAs). Lately I have noticed more jerks though. :(
In one of my games, this guy on my team started calling us "******s" for spending money on the store. It escalated between him and some of my other team mates and they ended up fighting instead of playing so we lost horribly.
I think the appeal of this game is that games don't last as long as Dota 2 usually so I think it makes situations like this easier to shrug off and people don't get as angry.

Lol there's more then me just saying theirs bad players that you can't avoid. so much for a discussion if you just go around posts you don't like.
The biggest tip to any new player, playing ANY hero is to group group group. The only one that is kinda on the fence with "always stay as 5" is Garden of Terror. Early/Mid game when night falls to collect seeds, usually top lane gets the top minion(not the boss) seeds then proceeds to go back in lane to soak. Middle usually goes to top or bottom depending on how many of your team mates are going for seeds top/bottom. Meaning you'd go to the side that has the least amount of people, usually to the side that has a lane that is solo, ex. Sylvanas and assist Sylv in getting seeds then head back to middle. Other then Early/Mid game when it gets into late mid or late game you want to stay grouped for all and any objective on Garden that is. This game works around team play and team fights more then any other MOBA.
And for other maps when a tribute spawns, mines are able to enter, and shrines spawn on temple just group up 100% of the time. Because most likely 9/10 their team is also grouped as 5. The only other map that is similar to Garden with questionable grouping is Bay and Dragon Spire, since you have to split to get both shrines at cap the DK. And on Bay you have to collect chests which most the time you group for soon as they spawn. Or killing merc camps to collect coins to not group, but whenever your team wants to turn in, you should try and group because then most likely the other team wants to turn in themselves or stop you from turning in and steal your coins.
Decision making is this game really isn't that hard compared to other MOBA's where doing your own thing might win you the game. But unless your a hero that has pushing power and your already ahead, I wouldn't suggest pushing a lane because your team will need you to group.
So a message to all babies out there, because this is "Babies First MOBA", and it's also the video version of "MOBA's for Dummies the book". Please head to a objective when it spawns, drop what your doing, look at the minimap and choose a path that is safe to group up with your team and be prepared to fight and most of all get the objective. That is literally all this game is. Get the objective, win fights, win the game. Who cares if your bad at a hero, play more games and learn the hero, but that doesn't mean don't go for objectives, group up.
