Great guide! Love playing my boy varian and being independent to do basically anything with little risk. Such a fun hero to play! Also one of my favorite heroes in Warcraft.
Absolutely love the fury build. So satisfying to solo towers while healing or quickly taking anyone's health to zero with just basic attacks (lots and lots of them!)
Arms is all about burst damage, so increasing Lion's Fang's damage for the burst window is key. The default Banner, and most of the time the ONLY Banner, for Arms is Banner of Dalaran. Therefore the increased Slow also helps keep up with your Colossus Smash target to execute the full combo. The Heroic Strike damage is just a bonus in the burst window, and should always be ready for that first Basic Attack after Colossus Smash.
I just find Overpower lacking behind the other two Talent options at Level 1. Lion's Fang is higher burst damage in the Arms build primarily because of Banner of Dalaran and High King's Quest is higher sustained damage in the Fury build because of the faster Basic Attacks and larger cooldown reduction on Heroic Strike (and the Protection build does not need the extra damage since its focus is on survivability).
Nice guide. Hits most of what I think will be good talent choices for his different builds. I thought that banner of stormwind would be good on his dual wield build for helping to chase down enemies. Also, I'm with you on liking the 2 Hander build best. Just waiting for everyone to grow sick of him so I don't have to queue long with him.
Unfortunately, the long queues are always a problem with new Hero releases.
As to the Banner of Stormwind, I thought about it and tested it a little. It can help chase down enemies, but the Movement Speed bonus on Basic Attacks is usually enough to keep up in conjunction with Charge and Lion's Fang. However, against a team that can keep you Slowed down then taking Banner of Stormwind is a great choice. I personally keep Banner of Ironforge to help my survivability when I dive in with Varian.
Also, I'm finding that I prefer second wind over victory rush as well. Especially on two lane maps. The burst heal is great but sometimes it's not available when you need it to and second wind is always active and the 50% LS also works great for the increased basic attack damage.
This patch has definitely changed Varian's Talent builds and I am in the process of going through them all over again to see which ones work out the best, mainly for Arms and Fury. This patch is a little bit of bad timing since Ragnaros just hit the PTR and I want to test him out as well to get a rough draft Guide going before his live release.
Back to your comment before the patch notes, if you need more consistent healing then definitely take Victory Rush. Works well if the enemy team is also trying to focus you down.
Overpower definitely has gotten better, but I still would not advocate taking it unless you are up against multiple Heroes with high Attack Speeds like Tracer and Raynor. The Heroic Strike refresh and the 25% bonus damage is nice, but most players avoid hitting Varian while he is Parrying. Overpower does not have much of a benefit for Protection, at least not more than the Slow amount and duration increases from Lion's Maw, and the Base Attack Damage Quest Rewards from High King's Quest are still better for Fury.
Hey thanks! Arms build is my favorite too! As soon as I get better from this awful whateverthissicknessis, I want to finish this guide up complete with videos show-casing each build. Hopefully I can get at least the text sections done today and tomorrow.
So I got to use the protection build and the fury build again this weekend both are really great choices. I'm surprised at how well Varian does in exchanges with the fury build and just how much abuse he can take with his prot build.
