Who Exactly am I? Top

Hi, I'm Kesper, a casual RTS and MMO gamer. I've played Starcraft for a number of years, but Heroes of the Storm really caught my interest. This is my first guide, but I hope to make many more. Thanks for reading, and make sure to give this thing a rating!

Arthas Top

Arthas is in an interesting spot for a warrior, and he can be either extremely good in solo queue or extremely frustrating to play. He's very tanky and can absorb tons of damage. He has godly self healing by level 10 and can take pretty much anything short of a Jaina burst combo and come out fine. Arthas also has incredible damage potential for a tank through his trait, Frostmourne Hungers. However, his movement is abysmal and he is easily CC'd by a coordinated team. To get the full use out of Arthas, your team has to follow up when you charge in and start tanking all that damage, otherwise you'll just run in and die.

Pros: Very tanky, can absorb stupid amounts of damage. Has great damage potential for a warrior. Lots of sustain.

Cons: Immobile. Has a hard time with CC. Engaging with Arthas has to be a real commitment. Once you go in, you can't come out until everyone else is dead or you are, otherwise you're just going to get blown up when you waddle away with your slow movement.

Abilities Top

Death Coil (Q): Self heal, or damage an opponent. I mostly use this to heal myself. The healing is decent, but the damage is kind of mediocre. Use this to finish off opponents if you can, but don't use it to harass or you'll run out of mana and not be able to heal, even with Frostmourne Hungers.

Howling Blast (W): Root enemies in the target area. This is one of the hardest parts about playing Arthas. Your W is your initiate, your peel, your playmaking ability. However, it can be hard to get use to the travel time on the projectile. This takes practice.

Frozen Tempest (E): AoE damage and stacking slow around you. This is a great utility talent. It drains significant mana, but in a fight you always want this on. The slow starts out small, but it can stack and it will let you chase down targets, even though you are really slow. The slow is great in teamfights.

Army of the Dead (R1): My personal preference. You summon a bunch of ghouls and can sacrifice them to heal for a good amount. This is what lets Arthas get shot in the face by everyone on the enemy team and live. This is an amazing ultimate. Just don't let your ghouls get AoE'd down by the enemy team and you'll have heals for days.

Summon Sindragosa (R2): An interesting ult. It summons a dragon that flies in a straight line, slowing opponents and freezing minions and structures. It's basically a mini-curse. However, I think this talent is kind of lackluster in that Sylvanas's trait does the exact same thing, and you're giving up the ultimate sustain of Army of the Dead.

Frostmourne Hungers (Trait): Activate to make your next auto attack strike immediately, do 100% extra damage and restore 30 mana. This is a great trait. It lets Arthas sit in lane forever, since he can self heal with the Q and restore mana with D. It also lets you burst down some squishy assassins if you can root and slow them, which is uncommon for a tank.

Tier One Top

Choices:
- Block: Gain charges that reduce auto attack damage by 50%
If you're going up against a lot of auto attackers and need this, then go for it, but I personally only use this vs. Nova and Hammer (and sometimes Jimmy).

- Eternal Hunger: Frostmourne Hungers now restores 60 mana instead of 30
This can be fun, since you can run into mana problems even with your trait. This makes it so you never run out. However, later, you won't have mana problems with normal Frostmourne Hungers, so this talent becomes kind of useless.

- Frost Presence: Reduce Howling Blast CD by 3 seconds
It lets you get off your playmaking ability more often. It also helps you live, since you can peel for yourself 3 seconds quicker. This will save your life, but you give up some tankiness.

- Regeneration Master: Collect regen orbs to permanently increase health regen
This is up to preference, but since the changes to it, I've been picking this more and more. It's now my go-to talent, especially when I pick more defensive talents.

Tier Two Top

Choices:
- Mercenary Lord: Reduced damage taken from non-heroic units by 50%
Kind of meh. Arthas might tank forts, but this really makes no difference in the big picture. Don't pick it.

- Destruction: Damage boost from Frostmourne Hungers (gonna abbreviate as FH now) increased to 150%
I go with this one because it lets Arthas do some serious damage. It makes him a bruiser as well as a tank.

- Frozen Wastes: Reduce mana cost of Frozen Tempest
Definitely a good talent. I don't pick it because Destruction gives you so much more power. Also, if you manage your frozen tempest well, you shouldn't need this. However, in a match with tons of tanks, this can be really good because it lets you keep up your tempest forever in those long fights.

Tier Three Top

Choices:
- Rune Tap: Every third auto attack heals you for 3% of your max health
It may not sound like much, but this talent is amazing. It gives you even more sustain, and 3% of Arthas's health is a lot. Plus everything else in this tier sucks. This ability use to be very overpowered. It use to be 6% of your max health. Then it got reduced to 4, then 3. Still, it's a great talent.

- Frost Strike: FH slows target
You have slow with your E. Don't pass up Rune Tap for this ****

- Obliterate: FH does AoE damage
Good for laning, **** for everything else. Rune Tap is better.

Death Touch: Death coil instantly kills minions, does dead minion explodes
Why. Just. Why. This does not help your teamfight potential at all.

Tier Four (Heroics!) Top

Choices:
- Army of the Dead: Summons ghouls that you can use to heal
In my opinion, the superior ultimate. This helps you tank more for your team and live through insane amounts of damage.

- Summon Sindragosa: Summons a dragon that flies in a straight line. Freezes minions and structures, damages and slows heroes
If you are in a two tank comp, this might work, but if you get focused then you will be wishing for Army of the Dead. However, if you've been surviving the damage being thrown at you and you think you'll be ok without some insane self heals, then you can go for the slow, which is admittedly very good.

Tier Five Top

Choices:
- Spell Shield: Every 30 seconds generate the ability to reduce enemy ability damage.
First choice if you've been dying to Jaina, KT, Falstad, Nova (if she's been giving you a hard time) and other ability heavy ability burst damage dealers. Otherwise, relentless or trail of frost is better.

- Relentless: Reduces stuns, slows, silences by 50%
50% CC reduction?! CC is the bane of your existence because it prevents you from healing. The go-to survival/tank talent for me. Pick this if there's lots of CC. If there's minimal CC, pick another talent, probably Trail of Frost.

- Trail of Frost: Howling Blast now affects enemies in the travel path
A real playmaker. You can root way more targets now if they're lined up. Also, if you're having trouble landing your W then this makes it easier. Second choice here.

- Biting Cold: Frozen Tempest damage increased by 50%
Sounds good, but the real power of Frozen Tempest is the slow, not the damage. This talent makes you use your utility talent for pure damage, which is a waste of mana and a bad habit.

Tier Six Top

Choices:
- Frostmourne Feeds: FH now applies to next two attacks
NEXT TWO! Basically, you're doubling everything - your best source of damage output, and the mana regen. Not to mention that the immediate auto attack counts towards your next Rune Tap. First choice for damage, which matters a lot in Quickmatch, since you can't rely on your team too much - you have to do things yourself. But, if you need to be more of a tank for your team, go with Immortal Coil or Stoneskin.

- Immortal Coil: Death Coil self heal increased by 50%, still heals if used on an enemy
If you didn't have enough heals, here's more! Definitely a good choice if you aren't being CC'd to death and want to keep your health up even more. A good talent, about tied with Stoneskin because it heals less than the shield but has a way shorter CD.

- Embrace Death: Death Coil heals more the less health you have
Interesting, but you shouldn't wait until your health gets low to get more healing from Death Coil. This talent isn't very good. Don't pick it.

- Stoneskin: Activate to gain 30% of your max health as a shield
My go-to for a more tanky Arthas. The shield is massive, as 30% of Arthas's health is A LOT. It has a 60 second CD though, so pick your uses of it wisely.

Tier Seven (Storm Talents) Top

Choices:
- Legion of Northrend: More ghouls created, heal for more. Good healing, gives you even more heals from a great ultimate. Pretty good choice.

- Absolute Zero: Sindragosa travels twice as far, roots, more slow. Pick it if you picked Sindragosa, as the double range is hilarious, and the roots make some plays.

- Hardened Shield: Activate to reduce all damage taken by 75% for 4 seconds. First pick, lets you be focused by an entire team and barely lose any health.

- Rewind: Activate to reset the cooldowns of all your basic abilities. I never use this. Double heals could be nice if you got immortal coil and double roots would be kind of funny, but it doesn't seem all that useful. Get Hardened Shield.

Talent Switches/Some Tips for Army of the Dead Top

Tier One you: can basically go for anything you want, but I'd say the weakest two are Frost Presence and Eternal Hunger. They don't add to your tankiness and they're honestly kind of crutches for people who can't land skill shots or manage mana. Block vs. Regen master really depends on the team comps. Block vs. Nova and other heavy autos, Regen vs. less bursty and more sustained dps, like Zagara.

Tier Two: Frozen Wastes helps if you've been having to use your tempest for long periods. Destruction is always almost better though.

Tier Three: There is no other choice. ALWAYS rune tap.

Heroics: Honestly, it seems up to preference, but if you're a solo tank, Army of the Dead seems like a must.

Tier Four: Everything but Biting Cold is an option. They add to your tankiness or allow you to root more people and make the plays.

Tier Five: It's a choice between the survivability and the damage. If you can afford to go damage and are confident you won't die, Frostmourne Feeds does insane damage. If you need to tank, Immortal Coil or Stoneskin is very good. I like Stoneskin more because it's a burst of shields, while with Immortal Coil you can still die easily if focused.

Storm Talents: If you picked Sindragosa then the upgrade is great. Otherwise, usually hardened shield.

Army of the Dead usage: when picking army of the dead, one of the hardest things about using it is the cast time. I would suggest waiting until the enemy team begins to focus you, pop stoneskin and then use Army of the Dead. They'll break through stoneskin, but then you'll have your ghouls up and you'll be able to heal through their damage, especially with hardened shield. It's frustrating to die because you cast army of the dead too late and you die before you can mash r.

Strategy Top

Early Game: You should be able to bully all other heroes in lane, since you don't have to worry about health and being out of mana. Just go on and start swinging. The only thing that can kill you is if you mess up and over extend with death coil and Howling Blast on CD. Also, use Frozen Tempest to clear waves faster, but turn it off right after.

Mid Game: Travel with your team. Arthas can't do anything on his own, unless your opponents really suck. They'll just kite you forever.

Late Game: Initiate with Howling Blast and activate your E. Summon ghouls and pop Hardened Shield in the middle of a large teamfight, and you should stay at high health, while dealing out and AoE slow, rooting stragglers and dishing out the hurt with your D (that's what she said)

Conclusion Top

Arthas gets a while to get use to. Seriously, I died 18 times on my first game. But, once you learn when to use your abilities, how to root and when to engage, you'll be owning some fools in the Nexus.

Thanks for reading my super long guide. Tell me how to make it better, and how to make better guides in the future. You can find me on Twitter @HeroKesper. Good day!
