This will be my first post to this sight. I may not explain things as clear as others (especially for new players) or lay it out the same. If you have questions please post them in comments.
The Lost Vikings are regarded as one of the highest skill capped units in the game. This is mostly due to the fact you get to split them apart and control 3 units at once.
The vikings main goal that always sits in their head is XP. If your not putting one viking in each lane your not doing it right. Each individual viking gets the same experience that a single hero does. By keeping them in lane you can get triple the amount of experience of others and even more with the play style.
When I first got HoTS I looked at the vikings and wanted them. I grinded out 10k free gold and purchased them only having some research on mind. I fell in love the first game and they have become my go to character since. I have played them for 90% of my games and still in love.
I have put some experimental builds I am trying at the bottom if you wish to see or try them.
Siege Build Talents Top
This build is all about siege damage with some use in team fights.
Talents
1. Explosive Attacks
I take this talent due to it allowing Baleog to clear a lane very quickly with proper positioning.
2. Its Sabotage
This is what will get you the most results until you get higher leveled. Having this kind of damage against structures early on can launch your siege damage if used at the right times. Push with the lane and when the other heroes are in a team fight for best results to not be countered.
Another Option is Mercenary Lord. The extra damage they can deal adds a lot given you can provide it in all three lanes. With the less damage taken as well you can even leave one viking behind to soak or deal more dmg.
My issue with this is it depends on the situation. Only a few maps really will benefit from this with the vikings since in my experience the other team focuses the mercs.
3. Spin to Win
With 90% of all vikings builds you want this. I am working on a few builds that don't use it but I need more practice. This will be your main damage dealer latter on when you get impatience is a virtue. Line up vikings next to target and all of their damage will stack on the target.
4.Play Again
Play Again is better than Longboat Raid for many reasons.
Play again allows you to be anywhere at once and always topped off for battle. This gives you the flexibility needed to provide a constant tower pressure while adding a second set of vikings for ending push in team fights.
5.Hunka' Burning Olaf
This is a major difference from many peoples builds. The point is you don't want to be in situations where you need an escape that bad. The more AOE damage for minions and gates the better.
6. Impatience Is a Virtue
From here on out if there is an enemy on screen hold down Q. You can spin so much that it basically becomes another basic attack. This provides tons of AOE damage for mobs and towers. This ability will also provide a good increase of team damage if you position properly.
7. Viking Fury of the Storm
This just adds more damage. With Play again and Impatience there is no need to decrease death timmer and Checkpoint Reached is pointless.
General Build Top
This will work for any map and will do you just fine.
Your job is to get your team XP as always but you will be more versatile in the whole game.
Talents
1. Explosive Attacks
Same reasons as Siege build.
(Another option could be Olaf the Stout. Can work well for getting a few more hits into him.)
2. Mercenary Lord
This will allow you to get most of the mercs as early as you want. That paired with having dmg bonuses in each lane can be an effective passive siege tool.
(Erik the swift can be taken if you love him enough)
3. Spin to Win
Always
4. Play to Win or Longboat Raid
Play to win will generally be the best option but Longboat raid can be helpful if both teams have either non, or one assassin to add a good amount of damage (mostly with the mortar)
5. Jump
Jump will be a much more viable option due to you being around the map more battling.
6. Impatience is a virtue
This will help with all your ability's use jump more often spam Spin to Win.
If you dont have many stuns on your team pick up Large and in Charge. Your role with this build is to fill all the gaps your team might have.
7. Viking Fury of the Storm
If you took the longboat raid pick up Ragnarok N' Roll. The extra mortar range is great help.
Merc Siege Top
This build mimics the Siege build other than picking up Viking Bribery at level 1 (baleog explosive attack is still excellent choice) and getting merc lord at level 4.
If there is a camp available you need to get moving.
Experimental Build Resistance Top
The idea behind this is to make your vikings as tanky as possible if you happen to be out of any tanks. This focuses on you picking up all the regen globes. (Having a viking in each lane helps a lot)
Their trait is now Viking Horde. This gives them .5 regen per globe. This paired with shields, healing with Olafs trait and Baleogs Pain dont hurt allow them to be (in theory) microed back and forth to keep a decent HP pool while using Jump to avoid massive one hit damage.
Erik being fast and with the most single target DPS of the three will need to be kited around as we wont be picking up Erik the swift.
Stick close to allies when in fights and use play again to be as annoying and tanky as possible.
I have not practiced this build much so it is experimental.
Other Experimental Top
Talent tree seems to be glitched if you try and add 5 :P
Baleog FTW
Level 1. Explosive Attacks
Level 4. Pain Don't Hurt
Level 7. Baleog the Fierce
Level 10. Play Again
Level 13. Nordic Attack Squad
Level 16. Executioner
Level 20. Viking Fury of the Storm
Erik Focus (I have yet to try)
Basic Idea is that you soak with the other two while you harass everything and grab objectives with erik. With his constant speed you should be able to piss off the slow guys while your other vikings push lanes. It sounds fun but I haven't had the guts to try it yet haha.
On top of it he does have the best base DPS of the vikings letting him deal a decent amount of dmg if ignored.
Level 1. Talent 2
Level 4. Talent 2
Level 7. Talent 3
Level 10. Talent 2
Level 13. Talent 2
Level 16. Talent 3 (Never really used 64k marathon need to try it more)
Level 20. Talent 4
Conclusion Top
The Vikings are a tough best to master but if they match your play style can provide loads amount of fun and rewards.
I will be updating this as time goes on (if I can, not sure yet still new here) To make it more user friendly and post feed back for experimental builds I make.
As for now this guide is incomplete but may be found useful or entertaining.
